🎓 Student vibe
Energetic and diverse. Marseille has a huge student population and a raw, authentic energy unlike any other French city. Nice attracts students from across Europe. The coast gets expensive in July–August but is surprisingly affordable in spring and autumn.

Europe's only national park between two major cities — 20 km of turquoise sea inlets and white limestone cliffs.
Hiking and swimming in the Calanques is free. During peak season some entry zones may require a free reservation — check calanques-parcnational.fr in advance.
💡 Student tip
Access is free on foot. Take the bus from Marseille Castellane to Luminy trailhead. Bring lots of water — no shops inside the park. Some calanques require reservation in summer (check calanques-parcnational.fr).
Marseille's oldest neighbourhood — colourful, hilly, full of street art, artisan shops, and the MuCEM.
MuCEM may offer free entry for EU residents under 26 — always check mucem.org before visiting.
💡 Student tip
Le Panier is free to wander. MuCEM (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations) is free for EU residents under 26 — verify at mucem.org.
Stone villages perched on hillsides above lavender fields — Gordes, Roussillon, Ménerbes, and Lourmarin.
💡 Student tip
You'll need a car or organised transport (tours depart from Avignon). Go mid-June to early July for the lavender. The villages themselves are free to walk.
Nice's iconic seafront boulevard — strolling, cycling, and swimming from the pebbly beach.
The beach and promenade are free. Colline du Château park is free to enter.
💡 Student tip
The beach itself is free (no lounge chairs — bring a towel). Walk up to Colline du Château for the best panoramic view in Nice — it's free and underrated.
Elegant university city, birthplace of Cézanne — famous for thermal fountains, Cours Mirabeau, and the Marché de la Place des Prêcheurs.
💡 Student tip
Cours Mirabeau is lined with century-old plane trees — grab a coffee from a student café and people-watch. Cézanne's studio (Atelier Cézanne) has student rates.
🎫 Student discounts in this region
Several Marseille and Nice museums offer free or reduced entry for EU residents under 26 — always verify individually. MuCEM is a highlight. The Calanques natural park is free to hike.
🚂 Travel tip
The TER network in PACA is excellent for coastal routes (Nice–Marseille), but inland villages often require a car or local bus. Check zou.maregionsud.fr for regional transport.
