🎓 Student vibe
Young and buzzing. Toulouse is France's fourth-largest city and has a disproportionately large student population (nearly 130,000 students). The pink brick architecture, wide squares, and café culture make it feel very liveable. Montpellier is similarly student-heavy with a Mediterranean feel.

The outer ramparts are free to walk anytime. The Château Comtal and inner fortifications have a ticket — EU residents under 26 may qualify for free entry (carcassonne.fr). Stay for the evening to see it lit up without the day-trip crowds.
A UNESCO-listed 17th-century canal stretching 240 km from Toulouse to the Mediterranean, lined with plane trees.
The towpath is free to walk or cycle. Boat hire is charged separately.
💡 Student tip
Cycle hire in Toulouse (€10–15/day) lets you follow the towpath toward Castelnaudary for a flat, beautiful full-day ride. No entrance fee.
The French side of the Pyrenées — glacial lakes, ibex, and dramatic hiking just 2 hours south of Toulouse.
Hiking in the national park is free. Access roads and some cable cars are charged.
💡 Student tip
Lourdes is a gateway city with cheap accommodation. The Gavarnie cirque is one of the most stunning natural amphitheatres in Europe — free to hike.
The 'Pink City' — Romanesque basilicas, Place du Capitole, the Garonne riverbanks, and Cité de l'Espace.
💡 Student tip
Cité de l'Espace (space museum) is excellent but charged — check for student rates at cite-espace.com. The Basilique Saint-Sernin (free) is a Romanesque masterpiece.
The world's tallest cable-stayed bridge, soaring above the Tarn valley, surrounded by wild limestone plateaus.
💡 Student tip
Worth a detour if heading between Toulouse and Lyon. The viewpoint (Aire de Millau Viaduct) is free. The causses make great hiking terrain.
