Château de Chenonceau

The château that spans the river Cher on elegant arches — called 'the Château of the Ladies' for its female owners who shaped it.

Student tickets available. Arrive at opening and exit via the gardens by the river. Combine with a bike ride from Tours (30 km).

Chartres Cathedral

One of the most complete Gothic cathedrals in existence — the medieval stained glass is the finest in the world.

Cathedral entry is free.

Cathedral entry is free. Tower climb has a small charge. The pilgrimage town is quiet and affordable for accommodation.

Loire à Vélo Cycling Route

Weekend to week

800 km of fully signposted cycling route from the source of the Loire to the Atlantic — designed with families and beginners in mind.

The route itself is free. Bike hire is charged.

💡 Student tip

Rent bikes in Tours or Blois for €15–20/day. The flattest and most château-rich section is between Tours and Saumur. Many campsites along the route cater to cyclists.

Amboise Royal Château

Where Leonardo da Vinci spent his last years, at the invitation of Francis I — the Château Royal overlooks the Loire from a clifftop.

EU residents under 26: check chateau-amboise.com for current free access policy. The Clos Lucé (Leonardo's house) has a separate ticket.

Azay-le-Rideau

A small Renaissance château on an island in the Indre river — its reflection in the moat is one of the Loire's most romantic images.

EU under-26 may be free — always verify at the official site.

🚂 Travel tip

Tours is the most convenient TGV stop for the eastern Loire Valley châteaux. Blois is the gateway to Chambord and Cheverny. The Loire à Vélo route is exceptionally well-signposted.
